Intranets

Good communication in any business is critical...

External communication with customers and suppliers is the driving force of the profits your firm will make.  However, internal communication, which is often overlooked, can provide just as great a return.

Well adopted intranet systems facilitate continual conversation within a business.  They communicate the businesses ethos, they empower the sharing of ideas and the building of support networks and most importantly intranets, by providing easy access to pertinent information they can provide real cost savings and efficiency improvements.  There is a place in every organisation for an intranet, fact.

So, what IS an intranet?

An intranet is an internally facing website providing information and role supporting tools to staff members. – simple!

A good intranet need not be complex and will empower staff to help the business to succeed, purely as a by-product of improved communication and availability of information.

Here are our tips on how NOT to execute an intranet project – ignore them at your peril!

  • Ignore input from your employees!  The I.T. Department know what the business needs – leave it to them.
  • Don’t plan!  Don’t think about what you want from your system, just go ahead and do it.
  • Use an ‘out of the box’ intranet system - You don’t need it specialised to your business’ needs.
  • Rush through the project as quickly as you can to ‘get it done’ or take the ‘slow and steady wins the race’ attitude - either is fine.
  • Keep it under your Hat - Don’t tell anyone about the project until it has gone ‘live’!
  • Don’t test it yourself! - Get your IT department to test the system – they know best afterall.
  • Don’t Use it!  Keep using your other methods of communication, ‘just-in-case’
