Case Study
Engineering Council – Digital Transformation
The Engineering Council is the UK’s regulatory body for the engineering profession and a registered charity. They hold the national registers of over 229,000 Engineering Technicians, Incorporated Engineers, Chartered Engineers and Information and Communications Technology Technicians.
The Challenge
The Engineering Council sets and maintains the internationally recognised standards of professional competence and ethics that govern the award and retention of these titles. In doing so it ensures that employers, the government and wider society, nationally and internationally can have confidence in the knowledge, experience, and commitment of professionally registered engineers and technicians.
The Engineering Council has many business-critical systems including a public facing website, a CPD platform, a partner portal, a qualifications database and an online tool for checking Engineering Council registration.
When we first engaged with The Engineering Council they had multiple legacy systems that had been developed by a variety of suppliers utilising a diverse range of technologies.
The leadership team of The Engineering Council realised that they needed to modernise and standardise their digital infrastructure to ensure that they continue to provide the level of service that the Professional Engineering Institutions rely on them for.
The Approach
ap16 held workshops with The Engineering Council to identify the higher risk areas of their existing systems and produce a roadmap for implementation.
Initially we engaged on an intranet document management task using SharePoint 2017, and then we took responsibility for supporting mycareerpath, The Engineering Council’s CPD recording tool.
We strove to understand their business and individual needs so that we could suggest the right solution for them. By demonstrating our knowledge of the systems and delivering cost-effective and robust solutions, we were asked to expand our support to their more complex systems.
The benefits of long-term relationships like the one we have with Engineering Council is that ap16 have acquired a wide knowledge base across their digital infrastructure. We have built strong relationships with the individuals at the Engineering Council and ap16’s developers know each other on a first name basis.
We provide a responsive service, and all support issues can be reported directly to our support email or via our telephone line. We also spread knowledge across our whole team so that during times of absence there is always a developer available who is familiar and equipped with the knowledge of each system.
Our Solution
By acting as a partner, not a supplier, to The Engineering Council, ap16 have supported their systems for over 15 years.
With the rapid pace of technology advancement, maintaining and upgrading legacy systems presents continuous challenge. We supported the legacy systems whilst upgrades and new implementations were undertaken.
We continue to develop and support new systems alongside maintaining the existing core databases and membership management tools.
We have become a trusted partner to The Engineering Council and we look forward to continuing to support them as they navigate and adapt to the ongoing requirements from their stakeholders and digital challenges that arise
